Louis Greeff, [31 Aug 2024 at 18:57:38]: Evening all. I have a rhino cow with suspected Shuni virus infection. Any ideas are welcome. I have not been able to save any of these animals The cow went down at about 10h00 this morning and cannot stand. I have tranquilised her 30 mg Sedolam and 50 mg perphenazine hydrochloride (WBP). She is no longer stressed, and her respiration is slow and deep. I have given her the following: Finadyne 30 ml, PreDef 30 ml, Vit B1 50 ml, CalciPhor 200 ml, BCoBolic 60 ml, Ringers 6 l, Ivermectin 60 ml, Duplocillin 100 ml Anyone else that has tried something else? This is becoming a real problem for us farmers. Ulf Tubessing, [31 Aug 2024 at 19:07:27]: Louis, test for rabies. Have a good evening. Ulf Louis Greeff, [31 Aug 2024 at 19:08:05]: Thanks Willem Burger, [01 Sep 2024 at 07:59:11]: For what it could be worth, maybe antiviral iv. Acyclovir Andy Fraser, [01 Sep 2024 at 08:18:58]: Good Morning Louis What was abnormal on your clinical exam? What other diagnostics have you done thus far? Any improvement this morning? Louis Greeff, [01 Sep 2024 at 08:39:55]: Andy, yesterday morning she was at the feed. She went down around 11h00. Her heart rate and abdominal sounds were normal, blood colour normal, just the paralysis of muscles. She fell over three times during night. I left her for a while, then pumped legs. I am wondering if I need to pull her up again? Louis Greeff, [01 Sep 2024 at 08:42:20]: This morning, she urinated well, and she keeps her head up for 5 sec at a time Repeated treatment now again. Her tail tonus is also better, I think The perphenazine works well. Compared to previous experience, she is calm and does not get exhausted by struggling to get up. Ulf Tubessing, [01 Sep 2024 at 09:38:22]: Hi Louis. Does she eat or drink? Rabies cases are clinically indistinguishable from your video but lose condition rapidly due to dehydration. I have never seen one hyper-salivating. Zoe Glyphis, [01 Sep 2024 at 09:43:15]: Might be beneficial to give her Vit. E and selenium Louis Greeff, [01 Sep 2024 at 09:45:00] Zoe, I did give her 10ml this morning Ulf, she can’t eat and drink. I am thinking of tubing her this afternoon Zoe Glyphis, [01 Sep 2024 at 09:51:45]: An electrolyte enema... Maybe for what it's worth, give her some plasma from the plasma bank? Ulf Tubessing, [01 Sep 2024 at 11:03:23]: Rectal fluids? Henry Labuschagne, [01 Sep 2024 at 13:34:58]: Botulism? Ryan Jeffery, [02 Sep 2024 at 06:28:30]: Hi Louis Why Shuni virus at this time of the year? With the drought and supplementary feeding given by farmers, what about botulism or Ca/Phosphate shortages.
