Neil Parsons, [14 May 2024 at 06:38:34]: Good morning all, Does anyone know what doses of WBP start to cause extra-pyramidal signs in zebra? We are currently testing 100mg of WBP (intramuscular) in adults without any ill effects. I would like to find the ceiling at which side effects develop. Used as a sole tranquilizing agent, I’m still not getting adequate tranquilization at 100mg – I have to add midazolam or medetomidine as well. (These are mass captured zebra) David Pretorius, [14 May 2024 at 06:40:19]: I must say that as you mentioned, the WBP doesn't seem to take adequate effect in all individuals. The addition of 5mg midazolam seems to kick start it quite well. Ulf Tubessing, [14 May 2024 at 06:44:55]: Hi Neil. I generally find 50 mg doing a fair job in darts and up to 100 mg great for stallions/big mares mass capture Neil Parsons, [14 May 2024 at 10:03:54]: Hi Ulf, how are you reversing these zebra? Are you leaving the medetomidine on board as a sedative? Also, what needle length are you using for your pole syringe in the case of mass capture? Ulf Tubessing, [14 May 2024 at 12:15:34]: Hi Neil. I partially reverse medetomidine in darted zebras. In mass capture (I have not done any for a long time), we used 1" needles on a pole syringe. It helps to inject them while in the crush or metal section of the loading chute, leave them alone for 5 minutes, and then load Neil Parsons, [14 May 2024 at 12:18:30]: I’ll try some longer needles and see if the effect is better. We also jab them in the crush where they can’t brain themselves so easily.
