Heinrich Davies, 18 July 2024. On the topic of water-based perphenazine, what is the best dose for giraffe 2.8m size for traveling in crates. I gave 50 mg on capture a few times but with them, it’s difficult to see what the effect really is on that dose. Has anyone increased the dose and if so, what results were seen? Much appreciated Ulf Tubessing, 19 July 2024 In darted giraffe, I have used 20-25 mg in the youngsters, seems to work well even though a low dosage Heinrich Davies, 19 Jul 2024 Thanks Ulf, and if they stood in boma for a while and I just want to give WBP for the transport, would you give the 25 mg or will you increase to 50 mg? Ulf Tubessing, [19 Jul 2024 at 11:46:01]: Heinrich, I have not used WBP in giraffe in boma situation. We dart and transport them without boma time. This works well for me. Pierre Nel, [19 Jul 2024 at 14:58:28]: Good to know - then their extrapyramidal symptoms are a lot different from that of azaperone or haloperidol overdose. HO Reuter, [20 Jul 2024 at 12:52:50]: I generally find giraffe travel well without tranquilization and I am always worried about them losing balance. I have used Clopixol Acuphase for boma holding with good results. 100 mg for around 3 m tall giraffe works very well to reduce pacing in boma. Nele Sabbe, [20 Jul 2024 at 17:32:00]: I agree. No sedation at all, or if you are really worried, give them Clopixol Acuphase 1 day in advance. You don't want them to fall! Ulf Tubessing, [20 Jul 2024 at 18:38:11]: At 20 mg WBP, they calm down a little bit, but not unsteady. I also do my giraffe transports (up to 6 days on truck with very bad roads) without tranquilisers. I only occasionally treat a mad one.
