Jacs Mostert, [01 Mar 2024 at 12:40:07]: Good afternoon. Can anyone recommend or suggest a dose for perphenazine HCL for relocating groups of elephants? Ulf Tubessing, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:07:51]: Hi Jacs, up to 2 ml for big bulls, 1.5 ml for big cows and adapt dosage downwards for smaller elephants if needed. The best is to inject IM at time of reversal, otherwise big bulls especially may have a hard time getting up Erik Verrynne, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:10:29]: How long is the effect Ulf? Ulf Tubessing, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:11:16]: Difficult to say, but I believe 3-4 days for sure. Erik Verrynne, 01 Mar 2024 Can you reduce the time by giving a lower dosage, or is it better to use haloperidol for shorter translocations of 8 -12 hours? Ulf Tubessing, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:18:39]: Erik they will transport nicely, walk off crate and be calm. They are not doped out Erik Verrynne, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:21:28]: My concern is based on them being released in the wild and need to interact immediately with wild bulls and find water. I have used haloperidol in the past, but seems like you have to top it after about 8 hours. I will try the first few with WBP and see what they do Richard Burroughs, 1 Mar 2024 That’s my experience, and also that of Kobus du Toit who transported 100s from GonaReZhou to SA in the 90s Ulf Tubessing, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:25:34]: Please give us feedback on your experience with WBP! Erik Verrynne, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:28:12]: Will do. How long before the WBP kicks in? Some are really old bulls and I am nervous about them getting up. They all got up in the recovery crate within 15 mins after administering the naltrexone the last time. Ulf Tubessing, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:38:08]: We also moved very big bulls from Khaudum NP and the first few we injected too early, and they had hard time getting up. After that we injected IM immediately after IV naltrexone, which worked well. You can also inject by pole syringe once they are up. Erik Verrynne, [01 Mar 2024 at 15:54:50]: Ok. I was planning on the pole syringe approach in the old guys Ulf Tubessing, [01 Mar 2024 at 17:07:46]: Cant fault you on that. I just wonder how much juice squirts out before the needle penetrates deep enough It is especially good if you routinely use azaperone in dart Erik Verrynne, [01 Mar 2024 at 17:21:39]: Not only that, they try and pull you down….😉 I use about 40mg azaperone in my dart Ulf Tubessing, [01 Mar 2024 at 17:38:07]: Can you blame them. Depending on time from darting to reversal I would consider IM at reversal Jacs Mostert, [03 Mar 2024 at 19:39:13]: Hi Ulf, Thanks for that! Please confirm, what concentration is that? We only have 20mg/ml WBP available here. Also, would you give to younger animals? Such as late teens. Ulf Tubessing, [03 Mar 2024 at 21:54:58]: Hi Jacs, we use 100 mg/ml, so adjust dosage accordingly. I tend to tranquilise adults and then observe youngsters and tranquilise as needed Erik Verrynne, 1 Apr 2024 Hi Ulf. I have tried WBP on ten bulls that I have just translocated. They varied between 25 years and 35 years and older. Some of them were big with shoulder heights of 3.2 m The best result was using 250 to 300 mg WBP. I had little response with 200 mg. One bull responded very lightly to 300 mg but I think he was an exception. The ones responding well were sleeping and leaning on the side of the truck and resting the tip of their trunks on the floor. Only one had to be “helped” to get out of the truck at 250 mg but he was 40 years plus. The others had no problem waking up and walking out. I think 180 to 200mg WBP in adult bulls are too low. Ulf Tubessing, [02 Apr 2024 at 10:56:28]: Thanks Erik! We moved 20 big bulls from Khaudum and used 200 mg perphenazine hydrochloride (WBP) to good effect. Your dosage seems to be more appropriate if considering size. Maybe there is also a regional difference in susceptibility.
