HO Reuter, [10 Aug 2024 at 22:28:16 If I have too little butorphanol stock for BMM (butorphanol-medetomidine-midazolam) combinations, the following will work well (or does for me, done quite a lot dehorning plus loading like this): For mature adult white rhino Thianil 2 mg + medetomidine 10 mg + midazolam 5 mg plus Hyalase. As soon as dehorning is done (or almost done), I give 25 - 30 mg butorphanol, plus 5 mg atipamezole / yohimbine combination. My normal process is to finish sampling for the RHODIS collection kits, other sample collection, take measurements, give treatments, get crate ready and approximately 5 - 10 minutes after partial reversal, I prod the animal once or twice to get it up and see it balance. If it is not responding as much as I like, I top up butorphanol and atipamezole / yohimbine, give 3 - 5 more minutes, and they should get up and walk easy (azaperone makes the walking / getting up more difficult). Once in crate, I give 0.6 ml diprenorphine. Erik Verrynne, [11 Aug 2024 at 07:43:40]: Thanks HO. That’s a nice back up plan. I have enough midazolam. Which midazolam do you use? Pierre Nel, [11 Aug 2024 at 07:44:50]: I was going to ask the same - human 50 mg/10ml or compounded 50 mg/ml midazolam? HO Reuter, [11 Aug 2024 at 16:53:32]: We are not able to get compounded 50 mg/ml midazolam in Namibia. At one stage, I used Zoletil up to 25 mg / rhino (works well, but would be cautious to use at this dose for walking). With Thianil - medetomidine mix, I fill up 2 ml dart with “human” Dormicum 5 mg/ ml. This works out at 5-7.5 mg/ rhino. Erik Verrynne, [11 Aug 2024 at 16:56:18]: Thanks HO - same here
