Ean van den Berg, 9 Sept 2024. Hi all, is this safe for ingestion by rhino? I am a bit worried about the urea? HO Reuter, [09 Sep 2024 at 23:26:44]: As far as I know rhino do not actually utilise urea as ruminants do but are reasonably tolerant to urea ingestion. Hein Muller, [10 Sep 2024 at 10:44:16]: Hi Ean Urea is metabolized to ammonia in the rumen of ruminants. Ammonia is the toxic component, hence there is less risk for monogastric animals. In their hindgut some fermentation and transformation can take place, but the absorption capabilities are much less in the hindgut. So, this is not really a risk. When I still had rhino, I put the urea blocks out for other animals – the rhino enjoyed chewing off chunks of the urea containing blocks without any problems ever. Ean van den Berg, [19 Sep 2024 at 13:32:18]: Baie dankie Hein
