Henry Labuschagne, [30 Jan 2024 at 10:23:17]: Ulf. With regard to our previous discussion, I give a long-acting antibiotic routinely. I believe the stress of immobilisation, transport, adaption to new camp etc. supresses their immunity and makes them susceptible to infections eg. Pasteurella, Clostridia etc. Also, the macrocyclic lactone injections in unvaccinated animals can cause issues with Clostridia. The Rhinovax from Design Biologix (DB) can be used with antibiotics without issue. The Botuthrax package insert warns against use of antibiotics with their vaccine. I just spoke to DB and they confirmed that antibiotic usage does not interfere with Rhinovax. Ulf Tubessing, [30 Jan 2024 at 12:42:33]: Thanks Henry. Due to the risk of resistance development, I am not keen on blanket use of antibiotics (even though they may help the odd animal). We have a very low mortality rate (definitely < 0.3%) in animals after routine management of darting without antibiotics. I don’t see the need for prophylactic antibiotics. In surgical cases of sick/debilitated animals, it is obviously
