Ean van den Berg, [07 Sep 2023 at 17:49:05]: Hi all, does anyone have experience using Excede in Lion? Henry Labuschagne, [07 Sep 2023 at 17:53:38]: I have used it a lot off-label in lions. Inject IM @ 1ml per 30kg. It gives at least 3 days antibiotic cover - much shorter than in cattle. Ean van den Berg, [07 Sep 2023 at 17:54:27]: Thank you Henry. How did you determine the duration of cover? The reason for asking is I am looking for something long acting Henry Labuschagne, [07 Sep 2023 at 18:46:22]: Ean. I extrapolated from work done in horses. In cattle, Excede s/c injected gives up to 7 days cover. If you need longer cover, you can use Convenia but it will be very expensive in lions. What condition do you want to treat? Ean van den Berg, [07 Sep 2023 at 18:50:01]: Thank you, Henry. A male that was in a fight, on the photo looks like a bad cellulitis of the left hindleg. I also thought of Convenia, but the cost will be a problem. Henry Labuschagne, [07 Sep 2023 at 18:56:49]: Those cases I normally dart, clean the wounds and give a shot of Excede. On day 4 if needed, I just dart with Excede. If he eats well, you can give oral antibiotics in meat. Amoxiclav is a good choice and not too expensive. On an adult male, I use 4 x Amoxiclav 625mg tablets bid for 7 to 10 days. Crush the tablets and put in meat. Ean van den Berg, [07 Sep 2023 at 19:03:28]: Thanks Henry, he is a wild male in 75 000Ha. We will assess the wounds tomorrow after darting, we might move him to a boma. Thank you for the advice
