Annie Mears, [9 Apr 2025 at 11:00:35]: Has anyone ever darted a rabid cow? I have one in a shopping mall car park - it’s aggressive towards anything that moves. It’s showing neurological signs - circling and walking backwards and throwing its head. It’s in a very built-up busy area, so I don’t think we can shoot it with a rifle, and I can’t get close enough to use a handgun. Are there any additional drugs I need to consider - higher doses or drugs that are more effective? At the moment my plan is to dart, euthanase and relocate the carcass to the state veterinarian. Roy Bengis, [9 Apr 2025 at 11:06:32]: If you have access to succinylcholine, dart it with 500 mg. It works very rapidly, less than 2 minutes, and the animal is brain dead within a few minutes. Annie Mears, [9 Apr 2025 at 11:16:42]: Unfortunately not. It’s however an interesting drug to think about having available Roy Bengis, [9 Apr 2025 at 11:22:24]: Annie, it is still used in human hospitals, so if there is one close by, you may be able to access some, due to the seriousness of the situation. Good luck. Annie Mears, [9 Apr 2025 at 11:27:01]: Thanks Roy Jacques ODell, [9 Apr 2025 at 11:54:00]: I agree with Roy. Scoline would be my choice here. Otherwise, just get it down ASAP and give Euthanaze IV. 10 mg thiafentanil and 20 mg medetomidine will get it down in 2-3 min.
