Dries Lessing, [28 Feb 2023 at 21:05:00]: Hallo everybody I need to sterilise and castrate some ferrets tomorrow. Does this operation differ from dogs and cats ? Can I use the same Domitor/ Ketamine combination as in dogs and cats? Anne Kornijenko, [01 Mar 2023 at 06:25:45]: Hi Dries, yes it’s a straight forward operation very similar to a cat spay or castration. You can use Domitor/ketamine at a rate of 0.1mg and 10mg per kg body weight and add on some isoflurane if needed for the females. They have a very fast metabolism. Give antibiotics and pain meds pre-operatively. I personally only use monofilament to tie and suture. I don't put in skin sutures - you can use super glue. For the males, I do a closed castration. Hope this helps you. Xander de Kock, [01 Mar 2023 at 18:20:22]: ??? To sterilise ferrets???? You are doomed if you do and doomed if you don't! They will most likely develop Cushing's either way. Use Deslorin. Henry Labuachagne, [01 Mar 2023 at 19:14:56]: True Cushing's disease is rare in ferrets. I have changed many Jills to Sprites and Hobs to Gibs without issue. If you are not going to breed with them, desex before 6 months of age.
