Ulf Tubessing, 7 Dec 2023 3 weeks ago, I shot an eland cow with afterbirth still hanging out and severe neurological symptoms. It turned out to be rabies positive. 24 hours later we found the calf walking alone in field, still covered in dried-out foetal membranes, in fairly good condition, and took to the bottle immediately. I was not completely sure if the calf of rabid eland. The calf is still going strong – it will be interesting to see if it does develop rabies or come through unscathed. Henry Labuschagne, [07 Dec 2023 at 09:11:36]: Ulf. What were the neurological symptoms in the eland? I have not seen rabies in antelope, but many times in cattle. They showed typical salivation, aggression, tenesmus, knuckling over of pelvic limb fetlocks, incoordination and constant bellowing.
