[2022/02/04, 19:17:13] Ian Parsons: Could I ask for advice on safest sedation/ immobilisation combination for a very weak (but awake) subadult white rhino. It is still able to stand up. This is the initial intervention, so I have no additional information yet regarding the possible cause [2022/02/04, 19:20:27] Luis Amaral: [2022/02/04, 19:21:42] Luis Amaral: This combination is very safe. I have used this in debilitated rhino successfully [2022/02/04, 19:22:13] Alex Lewis: 0.5-1mg etorphine and water. Add other stuff if needed by hand. Body condition? Be super careful if looks like chronic diarrhoea. [2022/02/04, 19:22:49] Luis Amaral: Reverse with atipamezole and naltrexone [2022/02/04, 19:25:05] Alex Lewis: I am not a big fan of anything that drops blood pressure (alpha2) in a beast of unknown condition. Straight etorphine or even fentanyl my choice. [2022/02/04, 19:26:22] Marius Louw: I agree completely. 0.5mg will definitely immobilize it sufficiently to work with and much faster to reverse if animal in distress [2022/02/04, 19:29:57] Douw Grobler: It brings us down to choices. In a severely debilitated animal there is very little respiratory depression with the combinations used by Luis. And it does work very well. [2022/02/04, 19:36:59] Alex Lewis: No effect on blood pressure? [2022/02/04, 19:38:39] Douw Grobler: I will ask Scott Citino to post some of their results at White Oak. [2022/02/04, 19:45:05] Ian Parsons: Thanks I will pass these options on and hopefully get some feedback in due course. [2022/02/04, 19:45:46] Manie du Plessis: Worked very well on a sub-adult heifer with a broken leg requiring frequent immobilizations. If you go on the low side, very nice standing sedation is achieved with excellent saturation level - even when adding ketamine to drop them if needed.
