[2022/03/08, 10:27:55] Erik Verreynne: Is there any progress or alternatives for current satellite collaring monitoring in rhinos. We have major challenges with AWT rhino leg collars the last 3 years. They often fail within 3 months. Any experiences with Vectronics or other brands in rhinos? [2022/03/08, 10:33:49] Andre Uys: Erik we have deployed in excess of 200 Rouxcel solar powered AI LoRa collars. The collars are not designed for tracking but with confidence send you an alert in the event of a poaching incident. The collars integrate with Earth Ranger. They do give one or two locations per day as well. Great tech, effective and well worth considering. [2022/03/08, 10:34:40] Andre Uys: Also able to set them to ping more frequently when one needs to undertake an elective procedure but this obviously affects longevity. One or two locations per day is usually adequate for monitoring purposes. The collars were deployed in a variety of habitats including black cotton soil and rocky terrain. [2022/03/08, 10:42:04] Erik Verrynne: Thanks Andre. I will get the details from you. There was an annual report locally stating unrealistically that we are using real time monitoring in one of our populations and it created massive expectations. Apart from suggesting tying someone on the back of each rhino, I cannot currently offer anything else. I have tried the waterhole RFID system, sat collars and not VHF collars. But I am called for a meeting after the congress to look at all alternatives. So anything will be of help. [2022/03/08, 10:42:36] Andre Uys: This is the answer… [2022/03/08, 10:44:30] Erik Verrynne: Now also vhf collars …. Sorry [2022/03/08, 12:11:00] Andre Uys: rouxcel.com
