Ulf Tubessing, [20 Nov 2022 ]: Good morning everybody I darted this 30 kg, 10 month old sable calf (less than 40% of size of its siblings) yesterday. History is that this was a poor doer from birth, seems to be eating OK. On clinical examination, it showed a moderate anaemia, poor condition, small old abscess on L mandibular ramus, but teeth OK. No heart murmur. Very dull, long and curly hair coat. The stool was normal. No other clinical abnormalities noted. I am still on the road, so no lab tests done yet. Any idea on differentials? I was thinking along the line of congenital liver/kidney disease (no heart murmur), dwarfism?? Hypothyroidism?? Has anyone seen cases like this? Kind regards Ulf Ryan Jeffery, [20 Nov 2022 at 07:35:04]: Mom had no or little milk Ulf Tubessing, [20 Nov 2022 at 07:38:47]: 10 month along? Andreas Gaugler, [20 Nov 2022 at 09:23:41]: Ulf what about something like Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) ? Has it ever been tested or found in sable? Henry Labuschagne, [20 Nov 2022 at 11:18:11]: Steenbok x sable hybrid ? Ulf Tubessing, [20 Nov 2022 at 21:15:34]: No idea about BVD nor if ever tested for in sable Robert Campbell, [20 Nov 2022 at 22:02:26]: I tend to agree with Ryan if at early age low milk intake due to mother having issues is a top DD for me, as they start on solids far too soon and are set back quite a bit. Also, if there is an abscess, it could have caused decreased suckling if this was painful enough, and may have led to a forced low intake from the pain. Ulf Tubessing, [21 Nov 2022 at 12:58:22]: This animal is 10 months old weighing 30 kg? Abscess small and superficial, not interfering with chewing etc Andreas Gaugler, [21 Nov 2022 at 13:08:31]: In sheep we often see abscess in lungs etc as well. I would treat with sodium iodide as well
