Ulf Tubessing, 26 Oct 2024 Hi everybody. Any idea why roan skin/hair could look like this? There are lots of roan, sable, lechwe etc in the same camp on 100% supplement feeding due to drought (lucerne, pellets). The skin on other animals looks good, but the roan have bare patches and look moth-eaten. Their hair is hard, showing curly bristles. I observed the animals for quite a while but no sign of pruritus, excessive grooming etc. There are a few ectoparasites (ticks/flies). Can it be the result of a mineral deficiency - Cu Zn?? Gary Bauer, [26 Oct 2024 at 18:07:52]: Psoroptes? Richard Burroughs ? Dermatophilus Ulf Tubessing, [26 Oct 2024 at 19:10:24]: No itch Roy Bengis, [26 Oct 2024 at 19:14:34]: Agree with Richard, ??Dermatophilus. Mineral deficiency in only one species, under the same environmental and nutritional conditions, unlikely. Ulf Tubessing, [26 Oct 2024 at 19:20:11]: Dermatophilus congolensis? No scabs, crusts nothing! Just very blunt, dull hard (bristle like) hair with patches of alopecia in some animals, but no observed rubbing against tree/ grooming. Is it not possible that one spp. is more susceptible to vit/min imbalance than others (perhaps an indicator of a problem)?? Intensive feeding is practiced, with close contact between spp., yet roan seem to be an underdog. HO Reuter, [26 Oct 2024 at 23:34:18]: Lice? Nutritional stress reduces immunity. Possibly roan more susceptible than other species?
