Paul Reynolds, [08 Aug 2022 at 07:42:06]: Morning everyone. For possible pyometra in lion, what would be a better LA antibiotic. I think someone mentioned Excede. Does it also have 7 days effect in lions? Dose? Henry Labuschagne, [08 Aug 2022 at 07:51:38]: Excede 1ml per 30kg, IM. The effect is 4 days in my experience. If budget allows, inject Convenia for longer effect. David Gerber, [08 Aug 2022 at 15:55:33]: If lion is healthy and pyometra open antimicrobial should not be necessary. How does it present? Paul Reynolds, [08 Aug 2022 at 18:58:00]: It was busy having babies, continues pushing and now has a swollen belly. Going there tomorrow. Only bases on history. May need caesarian too David Gerber: With protracted partition antimicrobial are certainly indicated Paul Reynolds, [09 Aug 2022 at 21:27:16]: Thanks David. To the group: 1. Can I prescribe Betamox tablets? Put powder in meat or will palatability be a problem? 2. What is the amount of ketamine you don't want to exceed? I only had Medetomidine/Ketamine with me today. I have had bad experience with Propafol/ ketamine in other species so decided to go with ketamine top-up only. Also, had to make huge incision to prevent bursting a very rigid and friable uterus. Lots of gas and 3 dead cubs inside. I decide to top up before it was too late. But I feel that I used a lot. The anaesthesia was smooth and lion was up and walking after 2 hours. (down for about same time) Usually give eg. Propofol to effect, doesn't matter how much, but would using ketamine the same way be bad? Henry Labuschagne, [10 Aug 2022 at 04:05:37]: I assume you gave Excede at time of surgery ? Betamox palatability should not be an issue. In an adult lioness, I would crush 625mg tablets x 4 BID for at least 7 days. Give in a small piece of meat or liver and make sure she swallows the full dose before giving more food. Make sure she drinks water and consider NSAIDs for a few days. I only use medetomidine + ketamine in lions : medetomidine 1mg per 40kg and 100mg ketamine per mg medetomidine used, also lignocaine local I top up prn with 25% of initial dose used. I assume she was on a Ringers drip during procedure . You get to a ceiling with medetomidine but if she is on a drip I would not be worried to give ketamine in 50mg boluses to effect until the procedure is done. Adrian Tordiffe, [10 Aug 2022 at 06:36:35]: Good advice from Henry. Ketamine is metabolised relatively quickly and 50 to 100mg top ups every 30 minutes will usually be sufficient especially if additional analgesia is used. Unlikely to see seizures at that dose. Propofol is metabolised far slower in big cats than in dogs, so recoveries are often very slow. Heather Nixon, [10 Aug 2022 at 06:51:13]: Hi. Just out of interest, do you mix the ketamine with medetomidine? Henry Labuschagne, [10 Aug 2022 at 07:46:55]: Yes
