After injection, walk the mare for about 5 minutes directly after. Leave foal in stable. If mare sweats and shows colic symptoms, inject Buscopan and Flunixin. Take mare back into stable. Stay out of stable but monitor closely. Have had 100 percent success in maiden mares that are disinterested in foals. [2022/02/02, 05:30:01] Ockert Botha: I agree with a dose for Lutalyse of 1 ml - then seldom see colic symptoms [2022/02/02, 12:07:40] Henry Labuschagne: How does PG work pharmacologically to let the mare accept a foal ? [2022/02/02, 12:34:33] Bart Gazendam: It creates a ‘simulation’ of the parturition for the mare and is therefore more acceptable for foals [2022/02/02, 13:01:58] Henry Labuschagne: Thanks Bart. I will keep it mind if oxytocin and manual manipulation of the cervix fails. I also give the mare perphenazine to calm her and it works well. I have used it to assist to empty fluid from uterus post AI or natural cover - the mare thinks she just gave birth, hence the foal acceptance is reset [2022/02/02, 18:47:55] Henry Labuschagne: What is the risk of intussusception when using Buscopan after PG ? [2022/02/02, 18:55:07] Albertus Coetzee: I only ever used Finadyne if colic occurs, never Buscopan - but mostly walking a horse sorts the problem out. If I can quote Dietrich Volkmann, a dosage of as little as 0.25 ml IM is as effective as 1 ml PGF2a and much less colic is seen. [2022/02/02, 19:02:55] Henry Labuschagne: What dosage do you routinely use for foal acceptance. [2022/02/02, 19:03:24] Albertus Coetzee: 1 ml [2022/02/02, 19:04:00] Henry Labuschagne: Estrumate or Lutalyse ? [2022/02/02, 19:06:56] Albertus Coetzee: Any of the two [2022/02/02, 19:15:12] Gavin Rous: I prefer Estrumate, but both work well. Do not give Finadyne initially, as the more violent the side effects of the Estrumate are, the easier the mare accepts the foal. [2022/02/02, 19:27:48] David Gerber: Estrumate has substantially less side effects in horses (and in dogs) than Lutalyse. I don't see the reason to use Lutalyse where we know that we are causing sweating and at least a mild colic. [2022/02/02, 19:47:05] Gavin Rous: Some mares refuse to accept foreign foals unless given Lutalyse or Estrumate. One thoroughbred stud in Colesberg routinely foster their foals onto Percheron mares to make it easier to ship their mares to be covered in the Western Cape or Natal. The foals then remain at home and are less likely to be exposed to transport risks, disease etc,. [2022/02/02, 19:48:40] David Gerber: I agree to give PG, just not Lutalyse, since the side effects are so much stronger than with Estrumate.
