Gareth Hunter, [28 Jun 2023 at 13:11:07]: Has anybody come across pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicosis in buffalo? There is a hell of a lot of this plant in the camp, which I am worried is from the Senecio genus, but I’m not sure. Quite a few leaves at the bottom of the plant are green. Trust me when I say I wouldn’t be surprised for them to resort to eating them. They are new to the camp, introduced on Sunday, and were clinically affected yesterday. 2 animals affected in a group of 15. Symptoms shown are that of lateral recumbency, weakness. One was paddling - one had a fever, other snot. Rest of group a bit lethargic. Blood biochemistry - elevated total bilirubin is about the most significant finding. One animals serum looked very yellow. The mucous membranes were more hyperaemic. Blood smears seemed fairly normal. PCVs 44 and 60.
