[2022/02/05, 13:05:11] Pete Morkel: With regard to our discussion the other day on getting blood to a rhino's legs and sternal vs lateral and what is a high dose of azaperone for a black rhino. An hour back, I immobilised a 6 yr old female black rhino with 3.5 etorphine + 106 mg azaperone and 4000 IU hyaluronidase. It was a good dart in the gluteals and she was down at 3:40. She went down sternal straddling a bush. I gave her 5 mg butorphanol IV and within 5 minutes, we pushed her on her side and kept her lateral for the next 75 minutes. Every 10 minutes we vigorously pumped her legs. At 20 minutes I gave her 120 mg of azaperone IM and at 1 hour I gave her an additional 0.5 mg etorphine and 80 azaperone. She got up very nicely (we had left her in lateral recumbency) and stood for a few seconds and then trotted off. I put the horn transmitters in at 7 cm for the front horn and 5 cm for the back - there was no blood or softness of horn at that level.
