Annie Mears, [23 Mar 2023 at 10:14:13]: Hi, I’m looking for some advice I am looking to give oral sedation to 3 adult servals that are barely tame to allow them to be caught from a very difficult boma situation where a straight dart will be impossible. We have a shortage of Dormicum - what would everyone recommend as an alternative sedation in meat. Thanks Chris Perkins, [23 Mar 2023 at 11:05:14]: I see V-Tech has an oral medetomidine. I have never used anything like that, but reckon it could work. Rob Jackson, [23 Mar 2023 at 13:53:34]: Have used Domitor orally in dogs. In a bribe. Seem to remember the dose being about double the injectable. Diethardt Rodenwoldt, [23 Mar 2023 at 14:27:39]: Have used medetomidine 50mg/ml diluted, injected in small amounts into loosely cut meat for lions as a sedative. It had an effect but not satisfactory - probably too little. Also used V-Tech: Aceprom 10mg/2ml tube carnivore paste instead of Dormicum, worked very well, sedative effect lasting about 45 minutes. They were alert but couldn’t walk. Annie Mears, [23 Mar 2023 at 15:07:25]: Are diazepam tablets contraindicated with hepatic problems or could I mix some Domitor and diazepam into meat? David Gerber, [24 Mar 2023 at 08:03:56]: Comparing oral and intramuscular administration of medetomidine in cats : That is a paper in oral use of medetomidine. In monogastrics it does work for sedation but as described it is not very accurate. Annie Mears, Diazepam is metabolised into the active metabolites in the liver. I would be cautious in animals with liver problems.
