Dave Cooper, [6 Nov 2002]: This Tanzania black rhino initially responded to Dexamethasone, antibiotics etc. Now after 2 weeks seems to be relapsing, but still with healthy appetite and body function. This is very similar to cases of Middleburg virus seen in KZN white rhino (see last video) . Any thoughts? After Initial treatment: Possible relapse : White rhino in KZN: In the cases we saw, only one relapsed. At the time, I thought an injury was more likely. In general with the neurological cases, treatment used were repeatedly administered rectal fluids (they were very tame animals), oral flunixin meglumine at a dose of 0.25mg/kg and Neurobion Vit B1). I fortunately did not confirm the one that relapsed with PCR ,but viral encephalitis was on DD list Chris Foggin [6:35 pm, 07/06/2022]: A zoo colleague in NSW, Australia, is asking if anyone has experience in cases and especially treatment of viral encephalitis in white rhino. My exposure to this is very limited, but if anyone out there has that experience, please let me know and I can put you in touch. Thanks.
