Ulf Tubessing, [27 Feb 2023 at 11:26:11]: Good morning everybody! I have a client with a couple of predator camps that are SEVERELY infested by red biting ants (species??) that cause the animals considerable discomfort. Any suggestions of getting the ants under control without poisoning the predators in the camps? They have smaller quarantine camps - I suggested treating these and 7 d later move predators into new camp and treat bigger camps (10-20 ha). Henry Labuschagne, [27 Feb 2023 at 12:17:09]: Pour white vinegar in nests to kill ants. Spread diatomaceous earth where ants are active and in sleeping areas. Probably fire ants, Solenopsis spp. Roy Bengis, [27 Feb 2023 at 14:36:08]: When I was studying in Mississippi, fire ants were a huge problem. They used crushed maize / wheat laced with a chlorinated hydrocarbon, which was placed at the entrance of the nest. This was taken down into the nest to be stored and consumed, and wiped out the whole colony. I am not sure what insecticides are currently available in Namibia. Henry Labuachagne, [27 Feb 2023 at 16:10:10]: That would be effective but would it be safe for the predators ? Roy Bengis, [07 Mar 2023 at 17:08:30]: Hi Henry, back to the fire ant problem. Coopers make a product called Antforce (Ultrakill) which you put in a bait, and it has a delayed action, allowing the ants to take it down into the nest and do it's dirty deed.
