Abdulghani Elbadrawi, [16 Jul 2024 at 19:57:21]: Greetings doctors, I just wanted to ask if anyone has used imidocarb for primates before and it gave a result? Chris Perkins, [16 Jul 2024 at 20:34:30]: What disease? Why the imidocarb? I personally have not used it. But I have people I could ask. Abdulghani Elbadrawi, [16 Jul 2024 at 20:39:59]: Blood parasites (Babesia) and severe anaemia, thank you so much really appreciate it. Chris Perkins, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:05:48]: Other options for small babesias are a combination of metronidazole / clindamycin and doxycycline. Imidocarb isn’t typically very effective for small babesias. Berenil (diminazene) can work for small Babesia sp.. But has its own risks. Atovaquone is expensive and needs to be given with a fatty meal, which can be difficult with leaf monkeys. Abdulghani Elbadrawi, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:08:12]: Thank you so much doctor for the help Chris Perkins, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:08:20]: Obviously oral meds will be difficult. So, if you are going to try injectable, I would try Berenil. At the standard dose, not the double dose that is sometimes referenced with B. gibsoni. And if it works write up a case report. How many need treatment? And if it’s not malaria? Abdulghani Elbadrawi, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:19:50]: We suspect that it might be malaria, but we are still waiting for the results of the tests for them. There are 2 monkeys that need treatment Chris Perkins, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:30:57]: If it’s malaria, I would look at what’s used on humans. At least that has been tested billions of times on primates. Abdulghani Elbadrawi, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:32:16]: Malarone tablets 250/100mg Anti Malaria - Single Tablet I got to this one, but I don't know where I can get it from? Chris Perkins, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:40:27]: I am unsure about malaria treatment. Malarone (atovaquone) is a daily dose for prevention in humans, but I am not sure about treatment – I think it’s more than a single dose treatment protocol. Abdulghani Elbadrawi, [16 Jul 2024 at 21:41:48]: Thank you so much doctor for the guidance ... Roy Bengis, [17 Jul 2024 at 08:11:56]: Primaquine is also an option for small babesias. Richard Harvey, [17 Jul 2024 at 09:56:09 (17 Jul 2024 at 16:23:30)] Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil combination) is licensed as a treatment for malaria in humans but is essentially useless as such. It is a ‘single’ tablet in that it is one tablet per day, but as either treatment or prevention, it is never a one-off treatment but a prolonged course. If malaria is confirmed, the best treatment is an artemether/ lumefantrine oral combination. These are sold under brands names Coartem or Cofantrine. These doses should be reduced but the dosing schedule the same - at hours 0, 8, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72. If oral is not possible, then IV Artesunate is generally preferred, as it performs better than quinine. This all depends a little on species. If T. vivax, one would need to treat the dormant liver stage with primaquine, as a 2-week course.
