Bouvy Claushuis, [06 Dec 2022 at 19:00:05]: Hi all, what is the deworming of choice for African elephant? Rob Jackson, [06 Dec 2022 at 19:11:53]: I use either Kyron Fenbendazole powder, or horse dewormer paste praziquantel / abamectin similar, according to weight. Sybrandt van Sittert, [06 Dec 2022 at 21:43:21]: Out of interest, under what conditions do helminths become a problem in elephants? Like most I've seen the dire effects of worms in sable subjected to SOS (stagnation, overpopulation and stress). On the other hand I've heard of post-mortems in healthy zebras where they were happily coexisting with 100's of 1000's of helminths, no problem. In my limited experience I've never really heard of it in elephants? Ockert Botha, [12 Dec 2022 at 06:41:03]: Hi Bouvy I would strongly suggest that you do faecal floats before deciding on treatment. Pyrantel /praziquantel powder compounded by Vetscripts still a good economic alternative as long as small Strongyles not prevalent. Also remember that single day fenbendazole treatment is not generally effective whilst 5 day treatment is much more effective and often an alternative to the ivermectins or moxidectins Rob Jackson, [12 Dec 2022 at 07:04:11]: ✅We would worm when adults worms visible in the stool, and they started getting minor colic incidents. This would resolve the problem. Sand colic also an unrelated issue. Particularly the older elephants, in the dry season, when eating more grass, psyllium husk resolved this. For both treatment and prophylactic purposes in susceptible animals, usually the older ones, deworming was effective.
