[11:09, 04/06/2022] Will Fowlds: Some updates on plains zebra stallion relocation. 10 adult males from mixed family groups/bachelors with 4 available compartments (which is normally not advised). I decided to try perphenazine hydrochloride/ water-based perphenazine (WBP) for 1st time (thanks to group info). Pneudart 2ml 1.5". the initial X-calibre setting was 4.5 bar from chopper, but too many bounces. I reduced this to 3 bar, and had no bounces. The initial dart resulted in 8-10min down time with etorphine 2 mg + medetomidine 5 mg + 30 mg perphenazine hydrochloride (WBP) + 1500 iu Hyalase. Some needed ketamine top-up for speedy handling. The last 5 animals were changed to etorphine 3 mg + medetomidine 5mg + 30 mg perphenazine hydrochloride (WBP) + 1500 iu Hyalase. The down time was 4-8 mins and no top-ups were required. The time from 1st dart to offload was 5 hours. There were all stable under immobilisation. Reversed all with 10mg naltrexone + 3mg diprenorphine I/M. NO A-2 antagonist or reversal was given!. 10-20 minutes to standing (in the video below prodded at 15 mins.). No jumping at all and no kicking. Very impressive suppression of usual behaviour for stallions of mixed social groups. Offloaded well. 48 hours later, still doing well. [11:20, 04/06/2022] Andre Uys: This is really great info Will. Always a challenging species. Do you think the sedation IM with 5mg medetomidine would work at mass capture? [11:22, 04/06/2022] ] Will Fowlds: Definitely worth a try and I would add WBP if travel expected to be longer than 2 hours. Lingering opioids are probably helping in this case too. [11:23, 04/06/2022] ] Will Fowlds: BTW. Due to a smaller 4th compartment, they stood 3+3+3+1 [11:24, 04/06/2022] Andre Uys: 👍👍 [11:26, 04/06/2022] David Pretorius: Why not M5050 on its own?? [11:35, 04/06/2022] Will Fowlds: M5050 alone should work. I went with theory of renarcotisation susceptibility and naltrexone for some peace of mind! [11:33, 04/06/2022] Neil Parsons: Hi Andre, I did a bunch of mass capture zebra a few weeks ago and trialled a few things. Some of the groups I got away with WBP alone using 50-70 mg IM. A number of animals I gave the 50-70 mg WBP IM plus 20mg of midazolam IM. Seemed to work pretty well for most of them. The real nutcases I gave 50-70 mg WBP, 20 mg midazolam and 5 mg medetomidine IM. The medetomidine certainly made a difference to the crazy characters. I have tried just 50 mg WBP plus medetomidine last year with fairly good results. Would be interesting to hear what other guys have trialled or used with success. [11:34, 04/06/2022] Andre Uys: Thanks Neil!!
