Louis Amaral, 4 Jan 2025 Does anyone know what parasite this is? It was sent to me by a farmer who is infected with it. He says they are coming out of his body, losing weight, and his doctor doesn't know what it is? I told him in the meantime to take Ivomec tablets. Size of a matchstick head, and this one came out of his nose. They have like some kind of hook Roy Bengis, [04 Jan 2025 at 8:06:35 PM] Location please, and what does he farm with.?? Luis Amaral, [04 Jan 2025 at 8:48:47 PM]: Mooiplaas, near East London. He has goats, chickens, birds and some donkeys. He also had a bird lice infestation in the ceiling. Thanks Roy Ulf Tubessing, [04 Jan 2025 at 10:22:54 PM]: Does not look like a parasite to me. Snot with hair? 🤧 Chris Perkins, [05 Jan 2025 at 7:05:22 AM] I agree. Doesn’t look like a parasite. Do they have more photos? Roy Bengis, [05 Jan 2025 at 7:06:47 AM]: Certainly, does not look like any parasite that I know. Luis Amaral, 6 Jan 2025 Hi colleagues, this is an update from Michael the farmer with the unusual parasites with some more photos. He is getting better... ‘Hi Luis, thank you for the message and feedback on the parasites and Vermox treatment After the traditional healer medication there has been a mass exodus of these critters, so I see this as good news that the medicine has worked, and it seems my challenge now is for my body to get rid of these toxic critters. Most seem to come out my nose, so I assume they in the phlegm from my lungs and head, many very small ones are coming out my ears too. I know there were many in my digestive system too, but I have plugged the courage to scratch around in my stools for specimens, at one stage I suffered a lot from flatulence (IBS) but this has practically now gone. My main challenges were lack of energy and constant weigh loss. I have not taken that many pics because they are so small, but I will share what I have taken Thanks 🙏🏼 for all the assistance and feedback, I’m very grateful. This came out my nose yesterday after spending a couple of hours on the tractor in the sun (the sun seems to help kill them)" Dave Midgeley, 10 Jan 2025 Dave Midgley, 11 Jan 2025 Linguatula is something we/you will probably miss if you don’t look specifically for it. Nice picture of L. nuttalli in "Veterinary Helminthology" (AfriVet book). It burrows 1 mm tunnels in the liver. Man is infested by ingesting eggs or larvae in meat (underdone?). L serrata is seen mostly in dogs. L. nuttalli is most common in lions in KNP it seems. Thanks for sharing this very interesting case - I also first thought that this was a "hoax"! It seems to be "quite common" in some other countries - found 2 names for it, which I can’t remember now. Dave Midgeley Pentastomiasis or Halzoun disease in humans!
