[2022/02/03, 08:34:11] Rikus v Rensburg: Good morning. This juvenile Harris hawk has an abscess-type lesion in the mouth. What are best treatment options/Baytril, lance wounds and flush with F10? If it matters, the hawk is used in falconry. [2022/02/03, 08:39:08] Alex Lewis: Do a wet preparation slide of the choana - check for fungi and Trichomonas. Lung and air sac X-rays are very important. Is the bird currently at flying weight? What is flying weight? Maybe it is a little low? [2022/02/03, 08:51:43] Neil Parsons: If you are convinced it is an abscess and not Trichomonas, Candida or Capillaria, then I would add in clindamycin as well as enrofloxacin to your treatment. [2022/02/03, 08:56:50] Henry Labuschagne: My first DD is Frounce. Do culture and examine smear under microscope. Tx with Dimetridazole. Topical CuSO4 [2022/02/03, 09:00:26] Xander de Kock: Peri-ocular sinusitis, pus in birds are like cottage cheese. Lance with needle below eye and remove all the pus, do culture, Baytril fine at this stage. [2022/02/03, 09:01:30] Xander de Kock: Inflacam at 0.5mg/kg bid 2022/02/03, 12:49:34] Rikus v Rensburg: Thank you all. Alex, it’s now at 800g, still young/in training. I am going to sedate it this afternoon and then see where the lesions leads to. [2022/02/03, 12:51:06] Alex Lewis: My experience, as guys trying to figure out best flying weight often go just too low and these kind of issues come up. [[2022/02/03, 14:36:06] Roy Bengis: In parrots, purulent sinusitis has been linked to Vitamin A deficiency. Possibly increase raw liver intake for a trial run. [2022/02/10, 07:24:57] Rikus v Rensburg: Morning all. A follow up on the Harris hawk. I found Trichomonas on a wet prep. Tx with Flagyl 50mg/kg oid - today will be day 6. The habitus and appetite are good. There is still facial swelling and damage to the side of beak. See Photo. How long do I need to give Flagyl for - the dosage I got is rather high. Any other supplementation (vitA, Zn, biotin) that help with healing? Thank you all for initial responses [2022/02/10, 07:29:56] Robert Campbell: Flagyl for 5-10 days [2022/02/10, 08:52:34] Henry Labuschagne: I treat frounce in raptors with 10 days metronidazole @ 30mg per kg bid .Then follow with 7 days Ronidazole. Also inj Vit ACE 0.1ml/ 100gr. Topical CuSO4 /proudflesh power.
