HO Reuter, [06 Jun 2023 at 21:40:05]: We hardly ever work with hippo up here in Namibia. So I thought to share this. A few days ago I darted an estimated 2 year old hippo bull calf that had gotten into a camp with no access to a dam. I used 60 mg Butorphanol, 30mg medetomidine, 100 mg Zoletil and 50 mg WB perphenazine and 5000 IU Hyalase, all in one 5 cc, 3” wire-barbed needle Pneudart. He showed signs in 3 minutes, went down in 7 minutes, good respiration, but sufficiently under with no danger of spontaneous arousal, or biting reflex. I gave the antidote of 10 ml atipamezole/ yohimbine mix and 2 ml Trexonil in the tongue. It was up and standing in the crate 5 minutes later. This dose is probably too high for use if hippo in water, especially with the Zoletil and WB Perphenazine, but good and safe for use on land.
