[08:37, 28/05/2022] Peter Rogers: Good morning all. I have a “downer” adult male ostrich - it's a very valuable bird. It cannot get up and is apparently very weak. The owner apparently injected it yesterday with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and vitamins. It drank water offered to it in a bowl, but no improvement today. Any ideas/advice as well as a possible prognosis will be highly appreciated please. [08:44, 28/05/2022] Willem Burger: Peter. Can you have a look, take a short video of downer reactions, temperature, mucous membranes, any faecal discolouration ? Avian Influenza is doing the rounds currently - fluorescent green urine is diagnostic. A swollen head is a likely indicator of Newcastle Disease. Welcome to call me on 0825705710 once you are on site Peter Rogers : [09:34, 28/05/2022] Henry Labuschagne : Agree with Willem. Adult downer ostrich = poor prognosis. Also rule out fracture, impaction and botulism as common dd's. You need to sling it to prevent muscle necrosis. [10:16, 28/05/2022] Daniel Kriel : Prognosis is poor. If it’s very sudden, a traumatic incident is high on my list. [11:02, 28/05/2022] Heinrich Davies: Winter 90% hookworm and energy imbalance.. [11:11, 28/05/2022] Willem Burger: Absolutely yes Heinrich!! Wireworm ; anaemia … [15:45, 28/05/2022] Roy Bengis: Ostriches eat bones, so what about botulism ??
