Bart Gazendam, [19 Aug 2024 at 09:45:12]: Hi. Can anyone give a HH dose (low opioid / high medetomidine dose) for a big adult giraffe from the ground? Hendrik Hansen, [19 Aug 2024 at 16:17:15]: Thianil 2 mg + medetomidine 20 mg. David Pretorius, [19 Aug 2024 at 16:18:22]: Hendrik, have you tried to add Hyalase to increase the absorption rate and decrease the down time and/or the total medetomidine dose? Hendrik Hansen, [19 Aug 2024 at 16:29:10]: No David not yet, but I have used Thianil 4 mg + medetomidine 4 mg. The downtime is shorter and they easier to handle under immobilization with the use of 2 mg Thianil and 20 mg medetomidine. Bart Gazendam, [19 Aug 2024 at 18:20:56]: Bit of feedback. I used the dose from the Capture book (Chemical and Physical Restraint of African Wild Animals) of 5 mg Thianil and 5 mg medetomidine. The animal went down by itself after 5-6 minute (with the addition of 5000 Hyalase). Breathing was good, and I it reversed immediately with naltrexone as soon as I got to it, but that was a bit too quick – the animal was very awake afterwards. So my advice is to wait with reversal till you are done! 😅 (Moderators Comment: This is not unusual with the use of naltrexone as an antagonist in giraffe capture. Many vets use diprenorphine or M5050 in this situation – the level of arousal seems to be less, and the animals are easier to handle). Xander van Eeden, [19 Aug 2024 at 18:31:18]: Hi Hendrik, what dose would you use for young “catchable” giraffe? 2.8-3.2m in height Hendrik Hansen, [19 Aug 2024 at 18:36:47]: Export size Thianil 0.75 mg + medetomidine 6 – 8 mg. Xander van Eeden, [19 Aug 2024 at 18:39:46]: Joh, amazing 😂 thank you! HO Reuter, [20 Aug 2024 at 15:57:34]: Reversal for this Hendrik?
