Mike Toft, [20 Jun 2024 at 10:15:50]: Morning all. I have a subadult cheetah male who split from his mother earlier than usual, hunted poorly, and lost condition. It developed a typical mite mange of the face and ears. I treated it with Dectomax, then three weeks later with Bravecto Topspot, but it got worse. It is now losing hair all over and so I took histopathology samples. The diagnosis was a severe dermatophytosis with possible immuno-suppression. I have submitted blood samples for a serology panel. Any suggestions on a practical treatment protocol - it is in a boma but is a wild free ranging animal? Adrian Tordiffe, [20 Jun 2024 at 11:50:57]: Hi Mike. Out of all the antifungals, I would suggest terbinafine at a dose of 30mg/kg q24hr for several weeks until the lesions have resolved, and the animal is culture negative. That would mean hiding the medication in food though, which won't be easy with a very wild cheetah. Bart Gazendam, [22 Jun 2024 at 13:36:17]: The stress of the boma might contribute to the further increase in disease? Perhaps try to significantly reduce stress any way possible.
