Alex Lewis, [18 Dec 2022 at 07:58:28]: I see some people add perphenazine hydrochloride (water based perphenazine - WBP) to darts, what so they do if an animal is double darted? Henry Labuschagne, [18 Dec 2022 at 08:22:31]: I have darted the same animal twice. A group of buffalo in a boma that start milling after the 1st dart is shot. In my case WBP was not used. To avoid that I only aim to dart in the left hind leg and use marker darts. Do not count on darts to sit in the animal to identify darted animals. As you know buffalo bite the dart from a darted animal. If you do not have marker darts, you can use a paintball gun to mark darted animals. Take your time, in a boma they are going nowhere. No need to dart 10 animals in under 10 seconds and end up missing shots at 10m and darting an animal 2x. If I gave 2x darts with WBP I would consider Akineton to prevent extrapyramidal symptoms. Erik Verrynne, [18 Dec 2022 at 09:00:39]: There is something to say for putting it in the dart when you have more control, or administering it afterwards when you may have to deal with assistants that listen with their arses. If the animals are low in condition you may have a problem with double darting. I had three sable bulls earlier this year where I had azaperone in the dart but an assistant administered each with 100mg instead of 30mg. I reversed the medetomidine fully and they were fine. Still responsive and it was not necessary to do anything. Ulf said he had animals that were very flat on 30mg but they were low in condition. Alex Lewis, [18 Dec 2022 at 09:34:44]: Mine were zebra chopper darted in big group....strange they struggled to maintain temperature and got cold at night. IV fluids and glucose helped but both died in two days. I am just not sure we should ever put WBP into darts as there is always a chance of a mistake. There is no reversal. Akineton did nothing as they did not show extrapyramidal signs Erik Verrynne, [18 Dec 2022 at 09:36:07]: What else were in your darts? Alex Lewis, [18 Dec 2022 at 10:08:51]: Etorphine medetomidine and WBP. I usually use etorphine and azaperone Henry Labuschagne, [18 Dec 2022 at 12:43:22]: What did you see on PM?. Sounds like capture myopathy rather than WBP issue. Alex Lewis, [18 Dec 2022 at 13:39:27]: Not capture myopathy....
