Ben Potgieter, [11 Jul 2022 at 21:15:29]: Any advice on dart dosages for Oribi.? I used Thianil 1mg with a mix of midazolam and ketamine in the past. Has anybody used Thianil/medetomidine mix? Neil Parsons, [11 Jul 2022 at 21:37:38]: Hi Ben, I’ve used a few different combos on oribi with medetomidine: 1. 0.5 mg Thianil, 0.5mg medetomidine, 5 mg azaperone 2. 0.3T, 0.5M, 5 mg azaperone 3. 0.5T, 0.5M, 3 mg midazolam 4. 0.3T, 0.5M, 3 mg midazolam Downtimes are generally less than 5 minutes with a good IM/thorax dart. I found that some of the oribi were going very deep with azaperone combos. They regurgitate quite a lot as well which must be from the medetomidine. I’ve only done a handful with Midazolam but it seems to be safer. Last year in December I lost sight of a ram after darting and only found him a good 30 minutes later. He was very deep but still breathing. The reason I haven’t taken the short acting tranquilisers out of the dart altogether is they are like popcorn in a crate when you wake them up. I guess you could give IV tranquiliser and hold onto them for a few minutes before release. 5mg WBP seems to work well for transport tranquilisation on top of the dart tranquilisers Ben Potgieter, [12 Jul 2022 at 05:15:39]: I also think the midazolam is safer. These are being translocated 10 miles away. I am most probably going to wake up in the veld.
