Andreas Gaugler, 9 Mar 2024 I had a chance this week to test HH on two Namibian oryx - wow, it worked a charm ( I know 2 is too few and somewhere I will get the chance to do more), but I was really impressed! Thank you Hendrik Henry Labuschagne, [09 Mar 2024 at 08:06:35]: Dose used Dries ? Andreas Gaugler, [09 Mar 2024 at 08:07:33]: 2.5 mg Thianil + 4 mg medetomidine + 50 mg ketamine; down within 3 min Henry Labuschagne, [09 Mar 2024 at 08:13:25]: Thx Dries. The Thianil dose is high? Andreas Gaugler, [09 Mar 2024 at 08:59:04]: I would try 2 next time, but remember these are Namibian oryx - we needed to use up to 10 mg Thianil Henry Labuschagne, [09 Mar 2024 at 09:02:25]: Stick to what works for you. Ulf Tubessing, [09 Mar 2024 at 09:32:55]: Andreas stick with your dosage! I am amazed that you got them down in 3 min. I tried it a long time ago and ended up darting them 2-3 times, with chopper times running at 15-20 min. Andreas Gaugler, [09 Mar 2024 at 10:33:09]: Ulf I am still worried, as these were only 2 animals. But given how well it went, I would try 2 mg Thianil with the next chance I get. I was also amazed at the 3 min down times, and rechecked to make sure. Tuesday morning was nice and cool and they were running not more than maybe 15 min before I got the dart in. But no real stress as we often experience, so that may have had a big influence as well. Henry Labuschagne, [09 Mar 2024 at 10:36:28]: If lowering Thianil, I would add azaperone 20mg HO Reuter, [09 Mar 2024 at 12:13:37]: Andreas, I have done lots of 18-24 months oryx with Thianil 2mg + medetomidine 4 mg + perphenazine HCL 25 mg + ketamine 35 mg from chopper, for really big bulls up to 1.5x this dose, and also mature oryx bulls / cows with Thianil 2.5 mg + medetomidine 5 mg + azaperone 20 mg. I also add 1000 mg Hyalase - the down times are around 5 min. It's important to use at least 1“ needles. In oryx, I like ketamine and / or Hyalase to reduce the downtime from chopper. Andreas Gaugler, [09 Mar 2024 at 12:21:41]: Thanks HO I was sceptical with our oryx at first, but was really amazed Erik Verrynne, [09 Mar 2024 at 12:38:30]: Hi Dries. That’s about what I use. I use azaperone instead of ketamine - mine takes a bit longer than 3 mins to go down. I agree with Ulf. I would not go down on the Thianil. Gernot Redecker, [09 Mar 2024 at 12:49:47]: For me the most important thing is the needle length. I used 3/4" needle and the oryx did not go down with 2.5 mg Thianil and 5 mg medetomidine. I went up to 4 and 8 to get them down. I started using 1/1/4" needle and the animals went down with 3 mg Thianil and 6 mg medetomidine in 3-6 min.... Erik Verrynne, [09 Mar 2024 at 12:52:43]: That is very true. The medetomidine needs to be deposited deep im. It does not forgive poor shot placement. I use 1 “ minimum. David Pretorius, [09 Mar 2024 at 13:03:02]: I agree with Erik - deep IM. Also consider using Hyalase - it will definitely improve the downtime. Andreas Gaugler, [09 Mar 2024 at 13:43:23]: Ok that makes sense Mine were 1 1/4" needles and good placement, so this must have had the effect Erik and Gernot mentioned
