What would you guys recommend as an “as safe as possible” combination for immobilising (or at least heavily sedating) a ruminant in a captive setting if they’re likely to be quite compromised? I have a young Barbary sheep I’d like to restrain to at least do some diagnostics. It has lost a lot of condition and appears quite weak (doesn’t seem to be verminosis). The rest of group seems okay. I can definitely manhandle this a bit, but likely to be really difficult or stressful to catch with no drugs at all. I’m thinking something containing midazolam/ketamine and maybe a bit of butorphanol? I realise there are tons of factors that need to be considered, but I just think one would need to avoid the potent opioids and possibly medetomidine? Thanks.
