Ean van den Berg, [05 Feb 2024 at 17:47:24]: Good afternoon, any advice on best dart mixture for fallow deer? Henry Labuschagne, [05 Feb 2024 at 17:54:40]: Ean. I did a lot recently and what worked best for me: Stag: Etorphine 2,5 mg + medetomidine 2.5 mg + midazolam 5 mg + ketamine 50 mg. Does: Etorphine 2+ medetomidine 2 + midazolam 2.5 + ketamine 35 mg. Luis Amaral also did a lot with a different mix / dose but on the day it did not work well so I used above. Note: I avoid Thianil and azaperone due to severe respiratory depression. Use this as guideline and adapt prn. I had no issues with vitals but be ready with Dopram and butorphanol and use prn. Richard Burroughs Hi Ean. Azaperone seems to be a problem. I remember doing a whole number with etorphine and azaperone, and respiratory depression and apnoea was a significant and life threatening issue Luis Amaral, [05 Feb 2024 at 20:32:14]: Use needles at least 1 inch. They have a thick fat layer and short needles don't work. The mix that I use is 1.5 mg of a mix M99/Thianil (a 50/50 ration) plus 3 5 mg midazolam and 40 mg ketamine for does and young rams, for big stags a bit more. I give 10 mg haloperidol iv before I reverse the opioid im at the trailer. Let us know your results. They respond differently from intensive camps or extensive areas Does I use 6mg haloperidol Stags 8 to10mg haloperidol Henry Labuschagne, 5 February 2024 Jonas Spruyt, [05 Feb 2024 at 20:39:46]: Hi Ean, I have done over a 100 in Europe with 0,2mg/kg detomidine (yes, detomidine) + 0,4-0,8mg/kg azaperone + 2mg/kg ketamine. It’s a fantastic combination, but 3ml darts needed – I never had any issues. The induction time is generally between 8-12 mins. Needles 30mm. Recovery a bit longer than with opioids, but nice and smooth. Luis Amaral, [05 Feb 2024 at 20:43:31]: Interesting. Is the regime currently with these animals are that they are intensively fed in a small camp? Hendrik Hansen, 5 Feb 2024 Thianil 0.5 + medetomidine 1.5 -2 mg + water-based perphenazine 4 mg for adult fallow deer
