Gareth Hunter, [25 Jan 2023 at 12:36:28]: Has anybody treated an egg-bound ostrich before? Have an adult female found completely collapsed this morning. She had laid about 3-4 eggs. Pretty much non-responsive. I do not know how long she has been like this. Have put on a drip (RLS) with dextrose. Have given 2 boluses of calcium gluconate Iv at 5mg/kg each and have given oxytocin at 1IU/kg IM. Tried to palpate through cloaca with little success. No response after about an hour. Will try and repeat. I’m really not great at U/S but there looks to be a retained egg? I have to send blood samples away, so no results there yet. Have given dexamethasone, Vit E/Se, ACE and BCo, and have also started on IV ceftazadime. Any suggestions? Thanks a stack. Henry Labuschagne, [25 Jan 2023 at 12:55:29]: My first DD is botulism. This bird has a poor chance of recovery. Check blinking reflex. Tube with Darrows solution and give a Docusol enema.
