[20:51, 24/05/2022] Jeanine : My dad has a buffalo bull that he got last year and since the bull got on the farm (close to Ficksburg), he has been losing a lot of condition and is now underweight. He has a good appetite, and will dominate the feeding area when they are fed pellets. Do I really need to dart him or can we dose him with Ivermectin in the pellets to start? They are kept on grass, gets lucerne and grass during the winter, salt licks in the winter and 2l of pellets per buffalo approximately. Being a small animal vet, I would like to take x-rays but that will not be possible … [21:26, 24/05/2022] David Pretorius: Hardware disease. Foreign bodies in the rumen, unlikely to be worms. Poor teeth could play a role. [04:32, 25/05/2022] Henry Labuschagne : I would not go the Ivomec in pellets route if not indicated. I would immobilise, do a proper examination (check teeth, mucous membrane colour, evaluate rumen function, perform a rectal examination to feel for rumen impaction. Lab : faecal examination, blood chemistry, CBC, blood smear, urine analysis. Ultrasound to rule out hardware disease and abscesses in liver and spleen.
