Newton Sparks, [21 Jun 2022 at 15:57:33]: Hendrik, with the high dosage of medetomidine - do you find some going down without being tripped? Hendrik Hansen, [21 Jun 2022 at 16:44:10]: Most stand, and very easy to trip, but yes some go down without being tripped. Once down, the breathing is great - there is no use to reverse anything quickly - you have lots of time for procedures or placing ropes, and good for attending to dystocia. Reverse 1:1 atipamezole / yohimbine mix to medetomidine used IV, in a ratio of 1: 1 atipamezole to medetomidine . Haven't seen any re-sedation on this dose. Scott Citino has seen some in reticulated Giraffe but so far I haven't seen any in our giraffes . Ian Parsons, [20 Jun 2022 at 14:36:32]: Good afternoon. Apologies if this is a repeat question. I'm interested to hear what are others thoughts regarding the upper safe limit of medetomidine and lower effective limit of thianil used for adult giraffe females? Thanks David Pretorius, [20 Jun 2022 at 17:16:01]: Thianil 0.5-1 mg and medetomidine 4-5 mg I personally like the really easy way they load as well. We reversed with 5ml (2mg atipamezole and 6.25mg) per ml IV and naltrexone 0.5ml which I think we can start using as standard doses, as with other species. Below are a series of videos, including ones where very inexperienced students load those giraffe. And it is a breeze... Ian Parsons, [20 Jun 2022 at 17:39:33]: Thanks. Did a mature female with Thianil 2 mg and medetomidine 4mg today and it was only manageable after 15 minutes. But no respiratory issues at all David Pretorius, [20 Jun 2022 at 17:45:20]: What needle length did you use? Was she in good BCS? 15 mins is ok. They are still fine. Remember this is way different than high opioid. You can relax and wait a bit. let them stand before tripping. The one I was walking behind we tripped at about 16 min... Ian Parsons, [20 Jun 2022 at 18:20:39]: 1 1/2" needle length. Quite a different response to 2/2 and 3/3 used previously. Good to know that over 10 minutes is to be expected. I was very happy with the strong respiration. Reassuring David Pretorius, [20 Jun 2022 at 19:16:56]: Medetomidine is not a fast acting drug. Very potent but not fast. We need to move away from the "rule" that fast induction is a safe induction... Hendrik Hansen, [20 Jun 2022 at 23:54:48]: Thianil 0.5 -1.5 mg and medetomidine 6-10 mg. With the good response to the atipamezole / yohimbine we get from V-Tech and Kyron, I go much higher on medetomidine with equally good or better results. I agree with David. One can add Hyalase for quicker action David Pretorius: Thianil 1.5 mg + medetomidine 3 mg. Fill dart with sterile water just for volume. Motsumi Screw-in dart 1.5cc 2" 13g side port. First effect shown at 1.5min. Video about 4mins into darting from helicopter. Blood sample showing colour of blood. Hendrik Hansen, [10 Jun 2022 at 23:02:08]: Great David, also gives you more time for procedures because they are not in trouble when going down like with high opioid..... David du Plessis, [11 Jun 2022 at 06:39:09]: Any Hyalase in the dart? David Pretorius, [11 Jun 2022 at 10:44:46]: None. I really don't think you need any. Induction is smooth and safe.
