Rob Jackson, [14 Oct 2022 at 13:06:30]: Removing snares on spotted hyena under free living situations. Any suggestions on best dose for rapid knockdown. I usually use medetomidine /ketamine Joel Alves, [14 Oct 2022 at 13:36:43]: I’m a big fan of BMM. I add ketamine for a more rapid knockdown otherwise my standard dose is: Butorphanol @ 0.3mg/kg Midazolam @0.15mg/kg Medetomidine @ 0.05mg/kg Rob Jackson, [14 Oct 2022 at 14:29:17]: Thank you, will try it. Ketamine 1mg/kg? Joel Alves, [14 Oct 2022 at 14:48:08]: 👌 perfect Kresen Pillay, [13 Sep 2022 at 12:50:48]: Afternoon all. What dose would you use for BMM in adult male spotted Hyena. They are around 55kg, captive setting. Recall 0.3/0.3/0.05 mg/kg being mentioned previously on the group. Capture manual has it at 0.1mg/kg for But and Mid instead of 0.3. Just want to make sure before trying. Doing 3 males. Have used Zoletil/Medetomidine and Ketamine/medetomidine previously. Andy Fraser, [13 Sep 2022 at 13:15:44]: Kresen you could potentially go as low as 0.1/0.1/0.05 in a captive setting but I'm not sure they'll sleep with those dosages. You can start with 0.15/0.15/0.05 and you may need to hand inject 25-50mg of ket if a little light. Will depend on temperament of the individual Terrence Thovhakale, [13 Sep 2022 at 13:26:19]: Hi Kres, I used butorphanol : 0,15mg/kg, medetomidine 0,025mg/kg, midazolam : 0.1mg/kg and Ketamine 2mg/kg. It was on 70kg female, worked with her about 1,5 hours without top ups Richard Burroughs Kresen and Andy. You must have animals equivalent to the Hounds of the Baskervilles. We have discussed this before, I know, but it is interesting to see the difference between what you are using and what the doses are that are used in KNP and Ezemvelo - those are the doses in the CPWRA (0.1 butorphanol/ 0.1 midazolam and 0.3 medetomidine. ) I cant ascribe these differences to anything in particular Andy Fraser, [19 Sep 2022 at 14:17:34]: Hi Richard We've done a pretty good sample size of both spotted and brown hyena with BMM. If it's a really relaxed animal it may sleep on Butorphanol 0.1+ Midazolam 0.1+ Medetomidine 0.05 but you may also get bitten. The problem with BMM is you have a lot of variability in individual response. You can negate that with using a higher dosage which still stays very safe for both the animal and the veterinarian Richard Burroughs No arguments with that, Andy. That's often a down side of using butorphanol. Kresen Pillay, [20 Sep 2022 at 11:33:41]: Some feedback on the spotted hyena. Did 3 adult males, 9y6m. All with 12mg butorphanol, 12mg midazolam and 2.8mg med (close to 0.2mg/kg butorphanol and midazolam, 0.05mg/kg medetomidine) All slept very well and could be intubated. Then carried out complete health checks. Had people "spectating" (students and media), so did not want to play around with different dosages, was happy with depth in first, so stuck to it. They would likely have been good on slightly lower dosages as well but needed to consider overall safety here. I had to do one at a time as they were transported to the vet clinic for radiographs etc. I did the most nervous animal first, and it took the longest to become recumbent, but was left quietly and not disturbed. It was recumbent around 10min. The second two were done an hour in succession. 2nd was down in 5min and 3rd down in 3min. Gave them longer before approached; all recovered well. Reversal with atipamazole at 5x medetomidine dose IM and naltrexone at 2 x butorphanol dose IV. Will post some pictures. Andy Fraser, [20 Sep 2022 at 11:50:46]: Kresen those were captive hyena right? Unfortunately yes Richard. It's such a lovely drug combo in the right animals Kresen Pillay, [20 Sep 2022 at 11:53:45]: Yeah captive setting.
