Angela Daly, [13 July 2023]: Good day colleagues, does anyone have experience with progressive eye abnormalities post capture/ in boma? This buffalo had only a cataract in its right eye in the first week in the boma showing normal behaviour. 2 weeks after capture and 7 days after lancing an abscess, its behaving as if blind... any thoughts? Chris Perkins, [13 Jul 2023 at 14:41:37]: It doesn’t look like cataracts, more corneal oedema. Where were the animals moved from and to? Brendan Tindall, [13 Jul 2023 at 15:02:20]: Worth maybe considering BMC! It is often sheep associated Angela Daly, [13 Jul 2023 at 15:39:39]: Just from veld to boma, EC near Cradock. Initially only cataract on the right eye. I agree now corneal oedema, not sure if even glaucoma. Henry Labuschagne, [13 Jul 2023 at 16:51:03]: Did you do an ophthalmic exam? Cataracts affect the lens. This looks like Infectious Keratoconjunctivitis. With Snotsiekte, the keratitis is typically centripetal Angela Daly, [13 Jul 2023 at 18:14:16]: Hi Henry, during immobilisation, there was no indication for in-depth ophthalmic exam – there was a unilateral cataract that I ascribed to age. The keratoconjunctivitis developed acutely in the last 2 days only. Best treatment suggestions? Bart Gazendam, [13 Jul 2023 at 18:17:53]: Hi Angela, just one animal? Nele Sabbe, [13 Jul 2023 at 18:41:47]: Hi Angela, I strongly believe in Draxxin (registered for eye infections). I had totally blind cases that healed up nicely. And it is a big advantage for wildlife in that it has a period of action of 2 weeks. Both eyes like this, 1week after treatment she could see again and it eventually healed totally Henry Labuschagne, [13 Jul 2023 at 18:51:16]: Rx depends in cause. I have seen cases of keratoconjunctivitis in sable and buffalo that were put in a boma with big round bales given for roughage. When feeding, they put their heads inside the bale and damage the corneas. If this is the case, put hay in racks. General treatment that I get good results with is subconjunctivally injected dexamethasone (if no corneal ulcer) and Draxxin; I/m Kyroligo and Terramycin LA; S/c Ivomec; Iodine eyedrops. Shoo fly ointment on skin around eyes. Angela Daly, [13 Jul 2023 at 19:07:27]: Thanks Nele and Henry 👍 Yes Bart, only the one Henry Labuschagne, [13 July 2023] I use an eyelid retractor to expose the conjunctiva when doing subconjunctival injections. Luis Amaral: This was taken at the Kwandwe workshop - Dr Gary Bauer, eye specialist in action. I have used the technique in nyala with great results Pierre Nel, [16 Jul 2023 at 23:24:52]: It seems to have a large superficial ulcer. Could a blindfold have damaged cornea? Nele Sabbe, [17 Jul 2023 at 07:49:10]: Pierre, no, it was a buffalo cow living for years in the same group in the same reserve, without any interference by people.
