Bart Gazendam, [08 Jul 2022 at 07:31:04]: Morning everyone - anybody experience with immobilisation of (compromised) pygmy hippos? Terrence Thovhakale, [08 Jul 2022 at 07:40:34]: Morning Bart, I’ve used the following combination for geriatric individuals: Butorphanol: 0.15mg/kg + Ketamine : 0.5mg/kg + Medetomidine : 0.04mg/kg + Midazolam: 0,15mg/kg Bart Gazendam: Little bit of feedback for those who might come across a pygmy hippo, unfortunately it passed away (pathology pending). We didn’t immobilise it but we managed to get blood from the tail vein (needle central and perpendicular to skin). Then we tried placing a catheter but that was very difficult. Best chances are medial side of the front leg, occlude leg with a string, find vein and make a small incision over the vein through the skin. I partially managed to get an over the wire catheter in… the veins are a bit smaller than expected as well. Saphenous vein hard to find. Blood drawing also possible from in between toes like rhino.
