[2022/02/24, 10:12:46] Janine Sharpe: Hi everyone, I have just received these videos / pictures and wanted to ask if any of you have seen anything similar? Any idea of prognosis? Mature Dicornis bicornis bicornis, circling, was in a fight but not sure when. I have asked guys on the ground to backtrack and see if a fight occurred because of circling or prior to it. They will put out water now too. Looks very neurological (hoping not rabies!) but any advice would be great! Thank you! [2022/02/24, 10:18:23] Jacques ODell: Hi Janine. Remember, the severity of neurological signs are not indicative of the prognosis. I would thus always, especially in a black rhino, give it a chance. Start by treating for the simple things - B1, anti-inflammatories etc. Rabies must always be on the list but let’s hope it is not. [2022/02/24, 10:21:13] Jacques ODell: Apart from the circling, he does appear mildly ataxic in the hind legs. [2022/02/24, 10:22:31] Janine Sharpe: Thanks very much Jacques! Appreciate it! What is your anti-inflammatory of choice and dosage for neurological cases? [2022/02/24, 12:04:35] Gernot Redeker: Hi Janine. Doesn't he have a head trauma from fighting, a sort of concussion. I don't know how black rhino react to cortisone, but that would be my drug of choice for head trauma. [2022/02/24, 12:22:24] Paul Reynolds: Is that not a bullet wound on the forehead? [2022/02/24, 12:37:58] Louis Greeff: Janine, I had a similar case in 2013. Two big bulls fighting and one literally broke its tip of its tusk off in the other ones skull. He had severe head trauma and also walked in circles. I darted with etorphine and midazolam, not Stresnil. He went down and we found the broken horn. Treated him with dexamethasone and Finadyne. Gave him Salix and fluids through a drip. When we woke him up, I only gave M5050 and gave iv 30mg diazepam. He stood up and lay down a few meters away under a tree for almost 18 h before getting up, but afterwards he was fine. I re-treated him 8 days afterwards - he still chases us around today. These animals are amazing, they can take big trauma and recover well. I would definitely treat him. [2022/02/24, 12:39:19] Louis Greeff: Also gave a lot of Biosolamine for the muscle damage due to the fighting and aimless wondering [2022/02/24, 12:40:20] Jacques ODell: Sorry for late reply. I would use dexamethasone, 0.5mg/kg. Dose range is so wide (0.05 to 4.4mg/kg) [2022/02/24, 12:43:10] Janine Sharpe: Thanks Gernot, it's on our DD list! Thanks for input 😁 [2022/02/24, 12:44:09] Janine Sharpe: Hopefully not, but these days we always check! Thanks Paul! [2022/02/24, 12:45:16] Janine Sharpe: Thanks very much Louis, that is unbelievable! But yes I've seen these guys recover from the most horrific injuries! Thanks for advice😁 [2022/02/24, 12:45:29] Janine Sharpe: Thanks Jacques!
