Thys Snyman, [30 May 2023 at 22:46:53]: Hi the Brainstrust With a Duncan applicator, what do you suggest I use for " bait" for game? NTK phoned a nutritionist and he suggested a mineral lick which contains 4% urea. Our animals are not adapted at all. Is this going to be a problem or should I rather mix in some salt? Henry Labuschagne, [31 May 2023 at 07:02:44]: What game spp. Thys? I shy away from urea in game unless they can be gradually adapted, closely monitored and the dip kept dry at all times. Urea and zebra are not friends. I prefer the Gielie-type dip trough with rock salt as my first line of tick control. Citrus is a good "bait " option to lure game to a Duncan applicator. Thys Snyman, [31 May 2023 at 07:21:55]: Thanks Henry. Kudu, impala, roan, zebra. My first thought was salt only as bait. Unfortunately the baboons will pillage the citrus. Henry Labuschagne, [31 May 2023 at 07:45:39]: Thys. Start with salt and see how it goes. Set up close to water-trough. I would set up a trail camera, so you can monitor animals taking salt. You can also put citronella oil around salt block to help to lure animals to the dip. Molasses meal also works as bait. Thys Snyman, [31 May 2023 at 10:14:54]: Thanks Henry. I'll start with salt. Interestingly one of my neighbours put out a molasses lick for the antelope and that too, was plundered by baboons. I like the citronella oil idea, thanks. Henry Labuschagne, [31 May 2023 at 12:11:15]: Where baboons are a nuisance, it helps if you can feed pellets, molasses, citrus late afternoon after baboons knocked off.
