Kelly van der Westhuizen, [29 Aug 2023 at 15:37:58]: Hi guys. Does anyone have advice on how to do a castration on an adult Duroc boar? Any help would be much appreciated as I have never done one before. Chris Perkins, [29 Aug 2023 at 16:13:12]: I have done laparoscopic vasectomy, and scrotal vasectomy on wild boar in Hong Kong. What is the reason? For castration? We did it as a trial to control populations. We weren’t aiming for males but we didn’t catch that many in night time operations, hence why we bothered with vasectomies. The project failed to control populations due to the large groups of piglets born to each female. The ones we castrated as juveniles, lost sexual drive, and became more of a nuisance to humans (the reason we were trialling this). They didn’t die off like other males who would fight for females, as the neutered males were a non-threat to other males. Elmien Kotze, [29 Aug 2023 at 16:27:15]: If you want to castrate so they can slaughter, you can administer 2 x Improvac 1month apart and that takes the boar taint away and they can probably slaughter it a month or 2 after the last vaccination. Kelly van der Westhuizen, [29 Aug 2023 at 16:46:25]: It is just someone’s backyard Duroc boar that he wants castrated. Nothing fancy😊 Thanks so much, but the owner is not planning on slaughtering any time soon. Elmien Kotze, [30 Aug 2023 at 07:22:41]: An old method that works is 20ml Euthanaze in 1 testicle. Wait for pig to drop and do an open castration. Make sure to remove Euthanaze testicle first. You need pig emasculators if you have, or large artery clamp forceps if you don’t and tie off with catgut. You are able to reach them from outside. Obviously, to get Euthanaze into the testicle in the first place is fun. If they have large wooden boards and a solid wall, you can compress the pig against wall and inject. Obviously, speed is important once Euthanaze starts working, so have everything all lined up. Elmien Kotze, [30 Aug 2023 at 07:30:57]: A 2nd more 'ethical' method would probably to tranquillise the pig and do castration after local anaesthetic. Tranquillisation options: Azaperone i.m. (use a very long needle if the animal is fat), then wait 30 min for effect. If this is not enough to be able to inject local into testicles/skin, then give medetomidine /butorphanol/ ketamine i.m. with very long needle as well. This should drop the animal enough to do surgery. The surgical procedure stays the same - open castration. I did not suture scrotal wound but can you can read up on surgical castration in boars for newest procedures Henry Labuschagne, [30 Aug 2023 at 07:33:37]: What MBK dose do you use? Remember to vaccinate Tetanus 1 month before surgery. Shaun Beverley, [30 Aug 2023 at 07:39:59]: Hey Kelly, We premedicate with azaperone (40mg/ml) @ 1ml/20kg, then place iv catheter (probably hardest part of it all) and induce and maintain anaesthetic with thiopentone (50mg/ml) initially @ 1ml/10kg bolus followed by top-ups at 50% of that dosage. Sometimes we need to place a mask with gas. Then perform an open castration with an emasculator. In the big boars, we sometimes suture the tunic closed, but generally leave the skin incision open. Kelly van der Westhuizen, [30 Aug 2023 at 08:04:23]: Thanks so much for everyone’s help... Elmien Kotze, [30 Aug 2023 at 08:14:44]: Use these dosages as previous discussions on this group : [2021/08/31,[01/07, 09:58] Good morning all Could anyone help me with a dosage regime for a potbelly pig? Owner wants to do hoofs Doc Henry: Per 25 kg I use 1.5 medetomidine + 10 azaperone + 2.5 Butorphanol + 125 Ketamine. NB to inject deep into muscle [2020/08/30, 14:47] Hi. What is the dose of BAM for a warthog? Is this the best to use to immobilize? [2020/08/30, 14:48] BAM 0.5ml plus 25mg ketamine per 25kg [2020/08/30, 14:49] Give at least 12-15 min induction time You can make your own mix as well Medetomidine 1 mg per 30 kg + Midazolam 1.5 mg per 10 kg + Ketamine 2 tot 3 mg per kg [2020/08/30, 15:14] This is the same combo we use to immobilize those viscous beasts known as potbelly pigs... But we use Ketamine at 10 mg/kg Bart Gazendam, [30 Aug 2023 at 08:49:28]: 5mg/kg azaperone also works fine on potbellies and pigs, they just sleep long 😴😴 Rob Jackson, [30 Aug 2023 at 10:59:55]: I darted a 100kg warthog this week to remove a pipe, wild but habituated around a lodge using medetomidine (0.05mg/ kg) and ketamine (0.4mg/kg). It was a relaxed procedure, with apparently a good dart. This made him wobbly but did not knock him down. It turned into a bit of a circus, more porcupine/rodeo like at the end, but topping up ketamine, then medetomidine / ketamine never completely sedated him....
