All three warthogs which showed similar symptoms in this 3-acre pasture died, as did three cottontail rabbits. Warthogs in an adjacent pasture which shares a common water trough were not affected. After many tests and head scratching, a diagnosis of botulism was eventually made.
The pasture is adjacent to a road and the ranch is close to the Mexican border. ‘Illegals’ moving through the ranch cause many problems and it was speculated that contaminated food was deliberately through into the pasture.
