Newton Sparks, [06 Mar 2025 at 11:08:16 AM]: Good morning. I have a black jaguar with paralysis and mydriasis. This looks similar to a case of ivermectin toxicity I had in another black jaguar. The only exposure to macrocyclic lactones was Bravecto Plus (including moxidectin) for Cats, with which it was treated 2 weeks earlier. I just want to get some ideas from the group: Has anybody else seen sensitivity in black jaguars to macrocyclic lactones? Can the release of the moxidectin be so slow, only to cause problems after 2 weeks??? (I will also talk to the manufacturers) Richard Burroughs, 6 March 2025 Newton. have a look at www.widlifevet.org. Henry has an excellent presentation, and Adrian discusses this as well. Newton Sparks, 6 March 2025 Thanks Richard! Will have a look. Baert Gazendam, 6 March 2025 Botulism should also be something to consider perhaps! Newton Sparks, [07 Mar 2025 at 8:27:43 AM]: Yes Bart, I agree. It is on our DD list. However, the animal is better this morning. Holding thumbs! Adrian Tordiffe, [07 Mar 2025 at 11:13:43 AM]: Hi Newton. The macrocyclic lactones and isoxazolines have the same mechanism of action, so when combined they can have a cumulative effect. Hopefully the moxidectin is far shorter acting than the fluralaner and should wear off. You could try a lipid emulsion IV, but if the animal is improving, then symptomatic treatment should be okay. We have not found specific felid species or colour morphs that are more sensitive to these drugs, but it is quite possible that individual animals might have genetic mutations that lead to accumulation of the drug in the CNS.
